Letter from Sarvodaya regarding current humanitarian crisis:

A Humanitarian crisis that parallels December 2004 tsunami is silently unfolding in Sri Lanka. Thousands of people were killed and about 300,000 people have been displaced. Most of the displaced people are living in extremely difficult conditions in several camps in northern Sri Lanka.

The services and facilities are highly inadequate for the people in the temporary shelters. Malnutrition not seen in Sri Lanka since 1970s have been reported from the camps. According to a survey, over one third of pregnant women are at risk. 40% of pregnant women, children under five and 50% lactating women are anemic.

"Health, water and sanitation situation is horrible. Many people are having skin diseases as they didn't get a chance to have a shower for days because of water shortage.”
Mr. V Anandasangree, a Tamil leader, told BBC .

Sarvodaya is one of the only few organizations that is active in the camps. Sarvodaya is providing food to about 30,000 people daily. In addition, another 20,000 people benefit through various other services such water, sanitation, clothes and nutritional supplies.

It costs  $1 for three healthy meals for a person per day.

Sarvodaya is also partnering with Chef’s Guild in Sri Lanka to cook 30,000 meals a day for displaced people.

Will you give $1 today and feed a person three nutritious meals? $30 will feed a person three meals for a month.
