Doing Time, Doing Vipassana

What difference does inner peace make in a person’s life? How can we find it? Is it possible for a meditation practice to shift the minds and hearts of even hard core prisoners? Winner of the Golden Spire Award at the 1998 San Francisco International Film Festival, this extraordinary documentary takes viewers into India's largest prison - known as one of the toughest in the world - and shows the dramatic change brought about by the introduction of Vipassana meditation. In giving Doing Time, Doing Vipassana its top honour, the jury stated that: "it was moved by this insightful and poignant exposition on Vipassana. The teaching of this meditation as a transformation device has many implications for people everywhere, providing the cultural, social and political institutions can embrace and support its liberating possibility."

Fambol Tok

Victims and perpetrators of Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war come together for the first time in an unprecedented program of tradition-based truth-telling and forgiveness ceremonies. Through reviving their ancient practice of fambul tok (family talk), Sierra Leoneans are building sustainable peace at the grass-roots level – succeeding where the international community’s post-conflict efforts failed. Filled with lessons for the West, this film explores the depths of a culture that believes that true justice lies in redemption and healing for individuals – and that forgiveness is the surest path to restoring dignity and building strong communities.

Global Oneness Project

Series of short films and interviews
The Global Oneness Project is a web-based video initiative exploring how the simple notion of oneness can be lived in our increasingly complex world. We're traveling the globe interviewing creative and courageous people who base their lives and work on the fundamental understanding that we are all connected and thus bear great responsibility for each other and our shared world. Our living library of films is available for free from our website or on DVD for events and educational use. We are committed to documenting what is being born during this time of planetwide transformation. While we are confronted with unmistakable signs that our current way of life is no longer sustainable, inspiring and innovative people and programs are blossoming in all areas of our collective society.

From a pay-it-forward café in Ahmedabad, to a youth program that brings African wisdom to Los Angeles, from the General Secretary of the Andean Nations, to the spiritual guardian of Uluru, our film subjects live and work with many of the following values, attitudes, and beliefs: We are responsible to each other, the earth, and future generations. There are enough resources for us all, if we share. Free exchanges of information allow for greater, collective creative potential. Love, care and compassion have the power to transform the fabric of society. We hope that by showing the diverse ways oneness is expressed—in the fields of sustainability, conflict resolution, spirituality, art, economics, indigenous culture, and social justice—others will be inspired to create solutions to personal and community challenges from their own lived understanding of oneness. The Global Oneness Project is a special project of Kalliopeia Foundation, a private grant- making foundation in northern California committed to honoring the unity at the heart of life’s rich diversity.

Leur Songe de la Paix

Speech by M.L. King Jr. at New York City’s Riverside Church in 1967. Inspirational audio-video piece for meetings and program events during Season.
Produced by Stephen Travis Pope
Music by S.T. Pope; Video/art by Lane Clark
To order FREE copy: snv@agnt.org
Running time: 11:00

"Leur Songe de la Paix" (Their Dream of Peace) is an 11-minute video/music work that uses a text by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-68) accompanied by computer music by Stephen Travis Pope and video images by Lane Clark. The motivation is to provide the simplest possible setting for several excerpts from Dr. King's famous "A Time to Break Silence" speech, delivered in New York City exactly one year before his assassination. The music is an abstract concerto in three movements for many voices, bells, analog synthesizer, orchestral samples, and Morse-code program. Lane Clark's mesmerizing video uses a series of painted slides to ccompany the text and music. The video is intended for projection together with a separate video in which the text of the speech scrolls by.
--------
The text (excerpts from Dr. King's "A Time to Break Silence" speech delivered at the Riverside Church in New York on April 4, 1967):
(1)
Oh, our government, and the press generally, won't tell us these things, but God told me to tell you this morning: the truth must be told. Oh my friends, if there is any one thing that we must see today, it is that these are revolutionary times. A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death. I am convinced, that if we are to get on the right side of the world revolution, then we as a nation must undergo a radical revolution of values. A true revolution of values will soon look uneasily on the glaring contrast of poverty and wealth with righteous indignation. A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies It will look across the seas and see individual capitalists of the West investing huge sums of money in Asia, Africa, and South America, only to take the profits out with no concern for the social betterment of the countries and say, "this is not just." A true revolution of values will lay hands on the world order, and say of war, "this way of settling differences is not just." Our only hope today lives in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit.
(2)
I have not lost faith; I'm not in despair, because I know that there is a moral order. And don't let anybody make you think that God chose America as his divine messianic force to be, a sort of policeman of the whole world. God has a way of standing before the nations with judgement, and it seems that I can hear God saying to America, "You are too arrogant; and if you don't change your ways, I will rise up and break the backbone of your power." No lie can live forever. You shall reap what you sow.

Paper Clips

Whitwell, TN is a small, rural community of less than two thousand people nestled in the mountains of Tennessee. Its citizens are almost exclusively white and Christian. In 1998, the children of Whitwell Middle School took on an inspiring project, launched out of their principal's desire to help her students open their eyes to the diversity of the world beyond their insulated valley. What happened would change the students, their teachers, their families and the entire town forever… and eventually open hearts and minds around the world.

PAPER CLIPS is the moving and inspiring documentary film that captures how these students responded to lessons about the Holocaust-with a promise to honor every lost soul by collecting one paper clip for each individual exterminated by the Nazis. Despite the fact that they had previously been unaware of and unfamiliar with the Holocaust, their dedication was absolute. Their plan was simple but profound. The amazing result, a memorial railcar filled with 11 million paper clips (representing 6 million Jews and 5 million gypsies, homosexuals and other victims of the Holocaust) which stands permanently in their schoolyard, is an unforgettable lesson of how a committed group of children and educators can change the world one classroom at a time.

PAPER CLIPS, presented by One Clip At A Time HMA, is a production of The Johnson Group, in association with Miramax Films and Ergo Entertainment. It was named one of the top films of 2004 (documentary) by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, has been acclaimed by critics as "Oscar caliber" (Joel Siegel, Good Morning America), and has received audience and jury awards at film festivals across the country.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell

The gripping account of a group of brave women who demanded peace for Liberia, a nation torn to shreds by a decades-long civil war.... Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country’s civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about a agreement during the stalled peace talks.

A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.

The Dhamma Brothers

The Dhamma Brothers tells a dramatic story of human potential and transformation as it closely follows and documents the stories of a group of prisoners as they enter into an arduous Vipassana meditation program. It will challenge assumptions about the very nature of prisons as places of punishment rather than rehabilitation. Despite the difficulty in obtaining permission to film inside a prison, the Alabama Department of Corrections allowed a film crew to document, not only the Vipassana program, but many other scenes and settings revealing the daily lives of prisoners and staff.
