• Gandhi Media Lecture-March/April
Gandhi Development Trust
Location:TBA, South Africa
The date for this event is still to be finalised. We have invited Barkha Dutt, the NDTV journalist to deliver this lecture for 2010. She will be speaking to the Students of Journalism at the Durban University of Technology as well as to a community audience. This is a lecture to highlight Gandhiji’s role as a journalist and his emphasis on ethics in media. As the influence of the media increases with modernisation there is an urgent need to re look at the role of journalists in the community. This is therefore an important initiative taken jointly by DUT and GDT.
• Speech and essay Contest
Gandhi Development Trust
Location:South Africa
This event will be held in March 2010, after preliminary rounds in the first week of March. The contest will focus on current issues affecting students among which will be sports and its value in our country and in society, the effects of colonial domination on people vis-à-vis indenture, prejudice and how it arises and what it does to people with specific relevance to indenture and slavery and other topics. These essays are meant to stimulate thought both on current issues as well as on personal development. For 2010 we are focusing on the system of indenture and all the consequences of it. We also focus on the taxation laws to enforce African workers to work in the sugar fields and mines and in homes. These questions will help young people grapple with issues faced by their forefathers no matter of what descent while developing writing and speaking skills. In this project we have a number of educators both as support groups, as organisers and as judges. We have outstanding English language scholars, we have journalists, DUT’s Department of journalism as well as some Gandhian scholars as advisers and judges. This event is an annual event and has been growing each year as more people hear of it and participate in it. During 2010 we are hoping to attract a large number of people to enter this contest. Participation from other countries would be great in the essay competition. We are also encouraging other organisations to run similar contests and then perhaps elect the finalists to gather together. This is a long term plan. The following is a notice sent to all schools.

Spring Equinox Peace Concert Holographic Sound Healing Paul Hubbert Saturday 7:30 PM March 20, 2010 The intention of the Ghandarva Ceremony of Peace is to honor all religious and spiritual traditions because the fundamental underlying thread of Truth is one in the same. Additionally, its purpose is to bring about the healing of world religions, as religion seems to play an integral role in the wars we've seen and continue to see in our world. In this powerfully poignant ceremony, Unity is symbolized by lighting one main candle representing Oneness as it burns away all illusions of anything other than Oneness. • Returning to Viet Nam in Peace
San Diego Center for Spiritual Living
Location:San Diego Center for Spiritual Living 1009 G Street San Diego, CA 92101
In 1969, Steve Bates left Viet Nam on a field stretcher as a wounded combat veteran. Since then, the effects and after-effects of those wounds have been a big part of his life as he pursued a greater understanding of what happened to him and what the war was really all about. During that time Steve authored "In Search of Truly Noland" and is currently working on his second book. In 2009, Steve returned to Viet Nam nearly 40 years after the day he last saw it. Steve was part of a group of 10 Purple Heart recipients from the Viet Nam war and found his trip was enlightening in mind and in spirit. He came away with a much better understanding of the war, the Vietnamese people, the country, and the circumstances of his involvement in the whole matter. Steve says his trip was "interesting, exciting, and therapeutic" all at the same time. Having taken over 1,000 photographs on his journey through Viet Nam today, Steve will present a pictorial view and relate stories from some of his many conversations with local people and his guide on March 30, 2010, which is also the first annual Vietnam Veterans Day in California. Join Steve as he presents the beauty of Viet Nam today and the resiliance of her people. Steve will be available for Question and Answer following the presentation.
