Settlement, established by Mahatma Gandhi in SA on 1.7.1940 and lived
at the Phoenix Settlement for approximately 40 years. Moved to Verulam
close to Phoenix settlement where children could go to school, as she
was under a banning and a house arrest order for 8 and a half years.
Provided voluntary social work services at Phoenix on a weekly basis.
Ran a nutrition programme in the area at some 10 centres in the remote
areas Covering clinics and creches. Organised in the Inanda and Phoenix
Areas, site of demonstrations against high rentals, evictions and a
host of other issues. Social worker by profession and was employed in
the child welfare society for some 15 years. Was an executive member of
the Natal Indian Congress, and in 199 joined the ANC. Was also
Treasurer and later vice chair of the Natal Organisation of Women.
Later in 1990 I joined the ANC Women's League. Appointed on the Codes
and negotiations team and later served on the transitional Executive
Council. On the ANC list in the 1994 elections and have been in
parliament since then. Mrs. Gandhi will finish this term in June 2004
and then will retire. Chairperson of the Domestic Violence Help Line,
and of Satyagraha Editorial Board. At present she serves on the Social
Development committee, Joint monitoring committee on the quality of
life and status of Children Youth and Disabled persons, on the
education and arts culture science and technology committees. Belongs
to the World Council of Religion and Peace Durban chapter and was a
founder member of this organisation.

Nawang Khechog was born in Tibet and fled into exile in 1959. he was a
monk for eleven years and studied with HH the Dalai Lama and many

Sogyal Rinpoche was born in Tibet and raised as a son by one of the
most revered spiritual teachers of this century, Jamyang Khyentse Ch'yi
Lodr? After Jamyang Khyentse passed away, Rinpoche continued his
spiritual education with Dudjom Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and
many other great masters. He studied at university in Delhi and
Cambridge, and began to teach in the West in 1974. Rinpoche is a master
of the Dzogchen tradition, and the founder and spiritual director,
along with H.E. Dzogchen Rinpoche, of RIGPA, an international network
of centres and groups that follow the teachings of the Buddha under his
guidance.

Born in 1944 in Amdo, Tibet, left his monastery, Amchok Tsenyi Gompa,
along with with his teacher, for further study in Lhasa, from where
they escaped to India in 1959. Continuing his philosophical studies in
the Buxa transit camp for exiled Tibetan lamas and monks in West
Bengal, he was later appointed abbot of the re-established Tashi Kyil
monastery, and then worked for 14 years in the Library of Tibetan Works
& Archives at Dharamsala. Following this he was Director of Tibetan
Medical Institute and then abbot of Gaden-Shartse Monastery in south
India for short periods. He spent many months in Tibet in both 1983 and
1987, and travelled extensively in the West, having taught Tibetan
philosophy and language at Vienna University in Austria for 2 years.

As president of Action-Learning Partners, Mitch specializes in helping
governing teams envision and co-evolve their products and services as

the founder of Resilient Systems.com, a web-based forum for the

organizational resilience. In both of these present capacities, he

Lynne Twist is the president of the Turning Tide Coalition, a gathering
of like-minded global organizations committed to inspiring a worldwide
conversation for global sustainability. The Coalition gathers
environmental, social justice and consciousness organizations to work
together to catalyze and empower a worldwide movement for a thriving,
equitable and sustainable way of life on earth. Lynne and her husband
Bill are cofounders of The Pachamama Alliance, an organization
dedicated to preserving the earth's tropical rainforests by empowering
the indigenous people who are its natural custodians. Pachamama also
focuses on discovering workable ways in which the knowledge and wisdom
inherent in both traditional cultures and the modern world can blend
into a new global vision of sustainability for us all. Lynne is also an
advocate and spokesperson for the end of hunger and the emergence of
women in cultures throughout the world. She has traveled extensively in
both the developed and developing worlds and addressed tens of
thousands of individuals and organizations on the issue of ending
hunger. She is a fundraising and organizational consultant and author.
Lynne serves as a trustee of the John E. Fetzer Institute, is
vice-chair of the board of the Institute of Noetic Science and is on
the boards of Youth for Environmental Sanity (YES!), the Global
Security Institute, the Kudirat Institute for African Democracy (KIND)
and the National Youth Advocacy Coalition. She serves on the Council of
Sages at the California Institute of Integral Studies and is
past-president of the State of the World Forum board of directors and
has served as an advisor and consultant to many global organizations.

Internationally recognized facilitator, educator and organizational
coach. She is Associate Professor of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine, and an independent consultant. Dr. Williamson is a
Founding Facilitator and advisor for the Fetzer Institute Courage to
Teach Program. She teaches physicians communication, teaching and
leadership skills, and helps leadership groups and organizations build
sustainable capacities in relationship-centered work, collaborative
decision-making and strategic planning. She leads renewal retreats for
professionals from myriad fields focused on finding and maintaining
meaning, courage, and heart in one抯

Ph.D. in Religion, Yale University, 1996; Provost, Hsi Lai University,
California; Law Degree from Taiwan University; Venerable Yifa has been
a nun at Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan since 1979. She received her
Ph.D. in religious studies from Yale University in 1996 and an award
the Ten Outstanding Young Persons in Taiwan in 1997. She has been an
administrator at Fo Guang Shan Buddhist College and at Hsi Lai
University, Rosemead, California, a visiting scholar at the University
of California at Berkeley, and a faculty member at National Sun Yat-Sen
University. Now she acts as the vice president of Deer Park Foundation
in New York. For these years Yifa has been engaged in interfaith
dialogues, some of occasions are supported by UNESCO; and was a
contributor to "Safe Motherhood Project" by UNICEF in South Asia
Office. Yifa is a frequent guest lecturer on diverse subjects,
including Chinese Buddhist philosophy, thanatology and ethics. Her
current research focuses on Women in Buddhism. Her book on monastic
rules and institutions, The Origin of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China,
